Angelin Preljocaj
Né en France en 1957, de parents albanais, Angelin Preljocaj débute des études de danse classique avant de se tourner vers la danse contemporaine auprès de Karin Waehner.
En 1980, il part pour New York afin de travailler avec Zena Rommett et Merce Cunningham, puis continue ses études en France auprès de la chorégraphe américaine Viola Farber et du français Quentin Rouillier.
Il rejoint ensuite Dominique Bagouet jusqu’à la création de sa propre compagnie en décembre 1984. Il a chorégraphié depuis 48 pièces, du solo aux grandes formes.
Angelin Preljocaj s’associe régulièrement avec d’autres artistes parmi lesquels Enki Bilal (Roméo et Juliette, 1990), Goran Vejvoda (Paysage après la bataille, 1997), Air (Near Life Experience, 2003), Granular Synthesis (« N », 2004), Fabrice Hyber (Les 4 saisons…, 2005), Karlheinz Stockhausen (Eldorado - Sonntags Abschied, 2007), Jean Paul Gaultier (Blanche Neige, 2008), Constance Guisset (Le funambule, 2009, Les Nuits, 2013), Claude Lévêque (Siddharta, 2010), Laurent Garnier et Subodh Gupta (Suivront mille ans de calme, 2010), Laurent Mauvignier (Ce que j’appelle oubli, 2012), Azzedine Alaïa et Natacha Atlas (Les Nuits, 2013)…
Ses créations sont reprises au répertoire de nombreuses compagnies, dont il reçoit également des commandes, c’est le cas notamment de La Scala de Milan, du New York City Ballet et du Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris.
Il a réalisé des courts-métrages (Le postier, Idées noires en 1991) et plusieurs films, notamment Un trait d’union et Annonciation (1992 et 2003) pour lesquels il a reçu, entre autres, le « Grand Prix du Film d'Art » en 2003, le « Premier prix Vidéo-danse » en 1992 et celui du Festival de Vidéo de Prague en 1993. En 2009, il réalise le film Blanche Neige et en 2011 il signe, pour Air France, le film publicitaire L’Envol, qui reprend la chorégraphie du Parc.
Il a également collaboré à plusieurs réalisations cinématographiques mettant en scène ses chorégraphies : Les Raboteurs avec Cyril Collard d’après l’œuvre de Gustave Caillebotte en 1988, Pavillon Noir avec Pierre Coulibeuf en 2006 et Eldorado / Preljocaj avec Olivier Assayas en 2007.
Plusieurs ouvrages ont été édités autour de son travail, notamment Angelin Preljocaj en 2003, Pavillon Noir en 2006, Angelin Preljocaj, Topologie de l’invisible en 2008 et Angelin Preljocaj, de la création à la mémoire de la danse en 2011.
Au cours de sa carrière, il a reçu plusieurs reconnaissances parmi lesquelles le « Grand Prix National de la danse » décerné par le Ministère de la culture en 1992, le « Benois de la danse » pour Le Parc en 1995, le « Bessie Award » pour Annonciation en 1997, « Les Victoires de la musique » pour Roméo et Juliette en 1997, le « Globe de Cristal » pour Blanche Neige en 2009. Il est Officier des Arts et des Lettres, Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur et a été nommé Officier de l’ordre du Mérite en mai 2006. Il a reçu le « Prix Samuel H. Scripps » de l?American Dance Festival pour l?ensemble de son œuvre en 2014.
Aujourd’hui composé de 24 danseurs permanents, le Ballet Preljocaj est installé depuis octobre 2006 au Pavillon Noir à Aix-en-Provence, un lieu entièrement dédié à la danse dont Angelin Preljocaj est le directeur artistique.
Sa dernière création Retour à Berratham a été présentée au Festival d'Avignon du 17 au 25 juillet 2015.

Résolument contemporain, le Ballet Preljocaj, Centre Chorégraphique National, compte une cinquantaine de créations, 24 danseurs permanents et donne en moyenne 110 représentations par an en France et dans le monde entier.
Histoire
1985 : naissance de la compagnie
Fondée en décembre 1984 par Angelin Preljocaj, très vite rejoint par Nicole Saïd en janvier 1985, la Compagnie Preljocaj devient Centre Chorégraphique National de Champigny-sur-Marne et du Val-de-Marne en 1989.
En 1996, la compagnie est accueillie à la Cité du Livre à Aix-en-Provence et devient Ballet Preljocaj – Centre Chorégraphique National de la Région Provence-Alpes-Côte-d’Azur, du Département des Bouches-du-Rhône, de la Communauté du Pays d’Aix, de la Ville d’Aix-en-Provence.
En 2006, elle investit le Pavillon Noir.
Une renommée internationale
Le Ballet Preljocaj est aujourd’hui constitué de 24 danseurs permanents, plus de 100 représentations par an sont effectuées en France comme à l’étranger. Depuis la création de sa compagnie, Angelin Preljocaj a créé 55 chorégraphies, du solo aux grandes formes.
Angelin Preljocaj s’associe régulièrement à d’autres artistes dans des domaines divers tels que la musique (Goran Vejvoda, Air, Laurent Garnier, Granular Synthesis, Karlheinz Stockhausen), les arts plastiques (Claude Lévêque, Subodh Gupta, Adel Abdessemed), le design (Constance Guisset), la mode (Jean Paul Gaultier, Azzedine Alaïa), le dessin (Enki Bilal) et la littérature (Pascal Quignard, Laurent Mauvignier) et le cinéma d’animation (Boris Labbé)…
Ses créations sont reprises au répertoire de nombreuses compagnies, dont il reçoit également des commandes. C’est le cas notamment de La Scala de Milan, du New York City Ballet, du Staatsoper de Berlin et du Ballet de l’Opéra national de Paris.
Une implantation locale
Outre la diffusion de ses pièces dans le monde entier, le Ballet Preljocaj multiplie les actions de proximité à Aix-en-Provence et dans la région afin de faire découvrir la danse au plus grand nombre : lectures, vidéodanse, répétitions publiques, stages et ateliers de pratique, interventions dansées dans l’espace urbain… un dispositif complet a été mis en place pour permettre au public de voir la danse autrement.
2006 : l’ouverture d’un lieu pour la danse à Aix-en-Provence
En octobre 2006, le Ballet Preljocaj a investi son nouveau lieu conçu par l’architecte Rudy Ricciotti : le Pavillon Noir, premier centre de production construit pour l’activité qu’il abrite où les artistes peuvent mener leur processus de création en intégralité, du travail en studio à la représentation sur scène.
Dans son Théâtre et ses quatre studios, des rencontres et des spectacles de danse sont proposés toute l’année : ceux d’Angelin Preljocaj et de compagnies invitées.
